Irina Begu, Ana Bogdan, Jaqueline Cristian to compete in Tiriac Foundation Trophy tournament
Romanians Irina Begu, Ana Bogdan, Jaqueline Cristian and Irina Bara will be competing in the Tiriac Foundation Trophy WTA 125 tennis tournament, prize pool USD 115,000, September 10-17 at The National Tennis Centre in Bucharest, told Agerpres.
The clay-court tournament organised by the Tiriac Foundation and the Romanian Tennis Federation will offer 160 WTA points to the winner.
„Through the series of tournaments organiSed by the Tiriac Foundation, we want to give a chance to as many Romanian tennis players as possible to participate in international competitions in order to gain experience and have the opportunity to accumulate as many matches as possible. There is still much to be done regarding Romanian tennis, but I believe that this is also important help for the players. I hope that next year we will have an ATP Challenger tournament in Brasov and an ATP tournament in Bucharest,” said Ion Tiriac.
The Ion Tiriac Trophy tournament hosted by the Grand Slam Arena in Bistrita was won by Anca Todoni. The trophy was presented by former great tennis player Ilie Nastase.
„In the week that marks 50 years since I became world number one, I am happy to be with you in Bistrita and to present the trophy to the winner of this tournament, to whom I wish great success in the future. I hope that the tournament here will become a tradition,” Nastase said after the awards ceremony.
Irina Begu won the trophy in 2022.
